Washington Rock Climbers First Ascents Database

This database documents first ascents (FAs) by climbers from the greater Washington, DC area — a project of the John Christian Resource Center (JCRC) and a labor of love still very much in progress.

Why “Washington Rock Climbers”?

The name pays homage to the first organized climbing club in the DC area, which eventually evolved into today's Potomac Mountain Club (PMC). Our scope, however, extends beyond any single club — we aim to document the contributions of all local climbers, past and present.

Who counts as a “local climber”?

That's a fair question, and admittedly a bit subjective. Our working definition is anyone who climbed primarily from the DC area, which we define as within roughly 50 miles of the city. We've also extended that boundary to include the Seneca Rocks area of West Virginia, where DC-area climbers have always had deep roots and close ties to the local climbing community.

As for club membership — in recent decades that's straightforward from club records, and the PMC has published annual membership lists since the 1980s. For earlier eras, we've taken a practical approach: if someone appears in an Up Rope newsletter, we generally consider them part of the community. There are exceptions, of course — some well-known climbers appear frequently in Up Rope as visitors or guests without ever being DC-area climbers themselves. Yvon Chouinard and John Reppy are good examples: familiar names in our records, but not local climbers by our definition.

Why isn’t my favorite climb listed?

Two reasons. First, we're just getting started. As of May 2026, the database covers a handful of local crags, Old Rag, Seneca Rocks, some routes in the Tetons, and a few in the Northeast — with much more to come.

Second, we've set a high bar for accuracy. Mountain Project provided a useful starting point, but we've found it incomplete and sometimes inaccurate for historical first ascents — so every FA in this database is verified against primary sources: Up Rope newsletters, PATC Bulletins, guidebooks, journal articles, and personal communications from climbers who were there. That takes time — but it means you can trust what you find here.

Why isn’t my name listed?

If you climbed in the DC area and your name isn't here yet, it almost certainly means we haven't gotten to you yet — not that your contributions don't count. We welcome corrections, additions, and especially primary source documentation. This is a community effort, and we'd love your help.
